Apparently my children like to commemorate their birthdays with sickness and hospitalization. (recall that after C was born he spent time in the NICU and Baby J spent time in the NICU since he was a preemie)
When we returned home from the party Baby J was not doing well.
I had taken him to the doctor on Friday because he had develped a high fever. I thought perhaps he had an ear infection or was just worried about him.
Our doctor examined him his ears, throat fine. The doctor suspected that perhaps although rare in boys, he might have a urinary tract infection from the flu-like symptoms he had from the stomach bug. That was negative. She also suspected that perhaps he could have roseola which after a high fever a rash develops. She told me that she would be on-call throughout the weekend and let her know of any changes.
He continued to have a fever but was managed well with ibuprofen. Brian stayed home with Baby J while we had C's birthday party.
Upon my return he was very sleepy. I called the doctor. It seemed his fever was no longer managed with just Ibuprofen and it appeared he had a rash. Our doctor gave me her cell phone number to call if there were any changes.
My mom offered to have the boys sleep over which proved fortuitous. That night Baby J stopped wanting to eat or drink. He was miserable and in pain. The tylenol ibuprofen was not working. Brian checked on us Sunday morning. Baby J appeared to be puffy and swollen. I called the doctor she advised emergency room. We are blessed to have such good medical care and hospitals close by.
Baby J had numerous tests run. It was difficult for the doctors to determine what was happening. He had a abdomen x-ray, a chest x-ray (even though he didn't have a cough), blood work twice, an ultrasound, and a urine test. Finally a nasal swab to check for viruses. Sure enough it was a respiratory virus that not only involves lungs but also a virus of sinuses, digestive and urinary tract. It manifests with these symptoms: flu-like with vomitting diarrhea, runny nose, cough, rash, and fever. Yes he had basically all those symptoms. I was told all children are exposed at one time or another. But affects little babies the worst. The incubation is long and highly contagious so we could have got it from our museums we visited during the break, when BAJA went back to school since it rampant with school age and schools, or church nursery with C.
Baby J was so sick he was admitted to the hospital. He was miserable. Brian went home to check on the boys to discover C had developed a fever so he stayed with the boys and I was with Baby J at the hospital. MISERABLE!! Poor little guy!
We were discharged late on Tuesday and then I needed to take Baby J to our pediatrician for a follow up. He is getting better still in pain at times but better. C is doing better and for him it's manageable because he will drink.
Well this is what motherhood is all about.!! The good, the vomit, fever, and the ugly!
